What in the hell is wrong with Texas? Oil must be leaking into what little water the state has left, because discrimination, stupidity, and sexism seems to have increased in recent months. And yet another Texas-style incident has occurred again, this time at a middle school against Hispanic students.

A Texas middle school principal banned Hispanic students from speaking Spanish.

It was business as usual on November 12th at the Hempstead Independent School District. Students arrived and went to class like normal. But then middle school Principal Amy Lacey changed the tone into a discriminatory one.

During the day, Principal Lacey made an announcement over the school’s intercom system. From that day forward, Hispanic students were banned from speaking Spanish under penalty of being kicked out of school if the new policy was violated. Scared and confused students went home that day and told their parents about the situation. Naturally, outrage ensued.

Hispanic kids went to school in fear that they’d be punished by teachers if they even spoke a word of Spanish.

Sixth grader Kiara Lozano told KHOU that many students went to school fearful that they’d be severely punished if even a little Spanish slipped out of their mouths.

“People don’t want to speak it no more, and they don’t want to get caught speaking it because they’re going to get in trouble,” she said.

Eighth grade student Yedhany Gallegos made a similar statement.

“She was like no speaking Spanish. I was like that’s my first language. She said, well you can get out,” Gallegos recounted.

Yet another student, eighth grader Tiffani Resurez, was told by her teacher that she would face consequences if she spoke a word of the language.

“There’s one teacher that said, if you speak Spanish in my class, I’m going to write you up,” she said.

This act of discrimination resulted in the suspension of the principal.

KHOU reports that 50 percent of Hempstead’s student population is Hispanic. Clearly, this new policy is discriminatory. Even the superintendent admits that the school had not adopted such a policy. Two weeks after the incident, Lacey was suspended pending an investigation and a letter was sent home to parents assuring them that “neither the district or any campus has any policy prohibiting the speaking of Spanish.”

Additionally, a spokesperson for the school released a written statement saying,

“The district has received allegations regarding this issue and the district is investigating the matter. At this time the administrator is on administrative leave with pay until the investigation is completed and appropriate action is determined. This is all we can say at this time as there is a pending investigation on this matter. The district is committed to efficiently and effectively resolving this matter with as little disruption to our students and their learning environment as possible.”

Here’s a video of the report from KHOU:

This isn’t the first time a Texas school has treated students poorly.

Apparently, Texas has gone crazy. This isn’t the first time a school in the state has subjected students to poor treatment.

In November, a different school tossed a boy’s breakfast into the garbage to bully him out of 30 cents. It was a brutal strategy that comes right out of the conservative playbook. But that’s not all. One Texas school actually exposed their high school students to extreme sexism when a “Christian” speaker was invited to give a presentation to an assembly. The students fought back and embarrassed the speaker across social media. Oh, and who can forget the rampant racism that is common in Texas. Some schools actually taught their students that African-Americans and Jews are inferior human beings.

The Republican Party anti-Spanish stance probably led to this incident.

As you can see, this isn’t just one incident in one school. It’s a string of incidents in many schools across the state that demonstrate what America’s schools could turn into if Texas’ brand of conservatism were adopted by the nation. It’s also yet another incident in the state that gives Latino voters more reason to vote against the GOP. After all, it’s the Republican Party stance against the Spanish language that probably led to this act of discrimination in the first place.
